In this work, we report on the novel results of photoluminescent properties of Mn - doped CdS and CdS/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals. There is noticeable increase of the PL emission intensity and subsequent photostability in Mn-doped CdS/ZnS core-shell nanocrystal samples compared with CdS:Mn nanocrystal samples without the ZnS shell. This shows effective passivation of CdS suface states by the ZnS shell. The photoluminescent emission corresponding to internal Mn2+ transition (4T1 - 6A1) at about 585 nm in the CdS:Mn/ZnS nanocrystals with high concentrations of Mn are observed quite clearly beside the intrinsic emission of CdS nanocrystals. The results may lead to application in electroluminescent displays and biomarkers.
