To help English majored students achieve the language proficiency learning outcome, there is a constant need for language training institutions toevaluate their course content as well as lecturers’ teaching quality. English written proficiency upper-intermediate 2 (EWU2) is a new course recently added to the curriculum for English majored students at the School of Foreign Languages - Thai Nguyen university for 4 years but has not yet been evaluated. This paper looks into the course content and the teaching activities from the students’ perspectives, finds strengths and weaknesses as well as proposes some suggestions to improve the situation. A survey wasconducted among second year students at the School of Foreign Languages. Results showed that while the course content proved relevant to learners’ need, learning motivation and effectiveness depended a lot on teachers’ methodology in and outside the classroom. The author proposes teachers’ diversifying teaching methods, making use of active teaching onesand having activities to aid students’ self-study.
